Hats in the Belfry: Summer Cloches

The Luna cloche

Fall is in full swing here in New York City. The trees are starting to don their luxurious mantles of orange, crimson, gold, and rust and the temperatures are dropping. Just this week we needed to turn on the heat to get the chill out of the apartment. The change of season also means that I’ll be cleaning and storing my Summer hats until next Spring, bringing out my deliciously lovely woolen gems. Before I do, I want to feature two, beautiful Summer cloches that I bought this year from Hats in the Belfry, the Luna cloche and the Belfry Maci Panama cloche. I’ve been searching for summer cloches for some time and was thrilled to find a large selection at Hats in the Belfry’s on-line store.

The Belfry Maci Panama cloche

The Luna cloche is a delicate, but sturdy, hat made from fine straw. The brim is asymmetrical and molded, and the crown sports a black and white grosgrain ribbon and floral detail. I’ve worn this hat quite a bit this Summer because it goes with everything, from sporty looks to more dressy looks,  and it’s easy to wear.

The Belry Maci Panama hat is exquisitely woven from natural and black straw in a checkerboard pattern on the crown and a zigzag pattern on the brim. The brim edge is trimmed with black grosgrain and a black grosgrain ribbon circles the crown. Since the crown is very high — and I don’t normally go for high crowns — it took me some time to get used to this hat. While the hat is structured in a more formal way, the natural straw makes it feel casual.

Both hats have worn extremely well throughout the Summer; they are well-made and quite sturdy. I’m ready wipe them off, stuff their crowns with tissue paper, and store them until next Spring/Summer.

I will fully admit, I ordered two wool cloches from Hats in the Belfry this week. I couldn’t help myself: their Fall selection is out-of-this-world and they’re a fabulous company with stellar customer service. They process and ship orders immediately and respond to emails promptly and always in a friendly manner. My hats were carefully packed and nestled together in tissue, arriving without a dent or blemish. And they sent me a hand-written THANK YOU CARD!!! Seriously. A THANK YOU CARD! It’s obvious that they care very much about their customers’ satisfaction and happiness … and heck, it’s a really nice thing to do.

I fully recommend Hats in the Belfry for their selection, quality, and customer service.

    • Aw, thanks! I’ve been collecting hats for a long time, but haven’t worn them in ages because they didn’t “go” with my Goth attire. Nowadays, I just don’t give a crap. No sense in having all these pretty hats and not wear them!
